SharePoint Server Patches Are No Longer Published in Windows Update

The people have spoken and Microsoft has decided to not include SharePoint server patches in Windows Update.

A couple of weeks ago I blogged that Microsoft had started pushing SharePoint patches out in Windows Update. Then I walked you through the process in this blog post. Today, Stefan Gossner posted on his blog that there were some more changes. Here is the relevant part for us:

As of March 2015, all Office product updates will be offered via Microsoft Update except for non-security updates for server products.

Emphasis mine.

It sounds like they’re going back to the Pre-February 2015 changes. This doesn’t change my guidance that you should not enable Automatic Updates in Windows Update, at least not in Production.

Really?

It was convenient leaving it turned on my Dev but really doesn't make a lot of sense.  I'm glad they pulled it.

SQL too?

Just wondering if anyone heard if the SQL updates are working the way they were prior to FEB 2015 also?

Not totally correct

"except for non-security updates for server products" means the security bulletin related patches will still be available on windows updates.
I think you should update the title to "SharePoint Server Cumulative Patches Are No Longer Published in Windows Update", because some SharePoint updates still are and this post may be misleading in that way.

I think you should update the title to "SharePoint Server Cumulative Patches Are No Longer Published in Windows Update", because some SharePoint updates still are and this post may be misleading in that way.

SharePoint dependency on Windows security patches

For older sharepoint 2010 environment (running at SP1 or SP2), is there any impact of applying latest monthly windows security patches ?

Windows administrators are quite strict in applying in windows security patches, but SharePoint is not being updated since long time.

Todd, can you please provide any reference for verifying what sharepoint patch level is compatible with what patch level of windows server 2008 R2.

SharePoint 2010 patches

Hi Todd!

I too wonder about the remaining sec.patches left intact in Windows Update for SP2010 "farm deployment".

Are these safe to apply?
