Budget Windows Tablet Roundup

Over the last year I’ve become simply entranced with the Windows 8 slate tablets that have been coming out. They’re small, they run full Windows, and they’re cute as a button. As with most things in Windows, there are lots of options. There are many, larger, full featured Windows 8 tablets out there. I use one, a Surface Pro 2, as my daily driver. With a dock, it functions great as a desktop machine. On a plane it works well as a laptop and a tablet. You can also use it to prop open a window on a warm summer day. However, it costs over $1000, which puts it out of reach for a lot of people. On the other end of the spectrum you can snag a 7” or 8” tablet for $100. That’s what this blog post is about. In this blog post I’ll compare several small, budget tablets to help you decide which one is for you. To help with the comparison I have included a non budget 8” tablet, the Dell Venue 8 Pro. Of the four tablets listed below, I personally own the Toshiba Encore Mine, the Insignia Flex 8, and the Dell Venue 8 Pro. I included the HP because of its popularity and its value. Here’s the list of the tablets and their features:

Asus Transformer T100TA

Just wanted to share my experience with the 10.1" Transformer...

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Transformer-Detachable-Touchscreen-Laptop/dp/B00OBQ59UK/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1423210542&sr=1-2&keywords=asus+transformer

After one month of daily use, I'm more than satisfied with this cute thing. I know it's twice the price of the little ones, but the screen size and the extra options make it more usable for me.

Some details:

- very good performance on the 32GB storage (other models can have 64GB, but you should be fine with 32GB)

- 9-11h battery life when I use it for office work and web browsing

- 2GB RAM - enough - I see the new models have just 1GB :(

- 1366 x 768 resolution

- microHDMI port - You can see fullHD movies on your TV without hickups

- microUSB 2.0 port & microSD

- comes with docking keyboard

- USB 3.0 on the keyboard

- some models also have a 500GB HDD inside the keyboard

The only downside I found so far is the charging time. With it turned off it takes 3-4 h to fully charge it.

But there's also a good thing regarding charging. If you have a 2A battery pack (for charging your phone) you can use it with this tablet.
With my 7500MAh battery pack I get an extra 4-5 h on it.

Kind regards,
Mircea

Stream 7

Todd - great work on the review. I came across it because I was looking for OTG/charge info on the Insignia tablet.  Too bad it doesn't support simultaneous OTG/charge.

Just FYI, the Stream7 does use WIMBoot.

Re: Stream 7

I'm glad you liked it. I'll update my cart to reflect the Stream 7's stats. It's one of the few of these that I didn't actually get to try.

Winbook TW802

I bought the TW802 a couple of months ago, just to have something to play with and keep in the car.  Of the winbooks, it was the most powerful and you can get it currently for $99. Shortly after getting it, I upgraded it to Windows 10.  I like it especially for the regular USB port as well as the micro-usb.  Having both comes in handy.  Here are some specs
