Creating a Windows Recovery Drive on a Toshiba Encore Mini Tablet

The last year or so I’ve really been enjoying Windows Tablets. In my last video I unboxed a Toshiba Encore Mini, a $99 Windows Tablet. In this video, the stunning sequel, I’m going to show you how to create a Windows Recovery Drive with it. While the video was created on a Toshiba Encore Mini, the same process will work with any other Windows tablet. Once you have a recovery drive created you can more safely delete the recovery partition and get some of that precious 16 GB back.

Let me know what you think. If there are other things you’d like to see me make videos of, let me know. I’ll see what I can do.

The real question is....

How do you put it back on....

From my experience, you don't. Toshiba wants $40 to put it back to the factory state. I wanted to sell my device in the same condition in which I purchased, so I thought there must be a way to put it back on. There is but it's very tedious. I gave up. But my Toshiba mysteriously wouldn't boot one day, and so I sent it back under warranty, and received a replacement device. Wish I had more use for this thing, it is nice, but I think I just have one device too many...  :)

Re: The real question is....

Unfortunately I don't know the real answer. :) In my case though it wasn't important. Since I had the Recovery drive I could reinstall Windows from that. I do see how in your case it would be handy though. I plan on making another video on how to remove the Recovery partition and get the space back. After that I'll investigate how to put it back. :)

Deleting recovery partition on Encore Mini 2

Todd, I've watched your videos and they are clear and instructive.  While I have successfully created a recovery drive for my mini, I cannot delete the recovery partition.  I cannot do it from within Windows, and using DISKPART on the command line won't work, either.  Is there any way to do this?  If not, is there any other way to get more space on my drive?  As it is, i have less than 1g available, and i really haven't put anything onto the machine.
Thanks,
Gerry

Re: Deleting recovery partition on Encore Mini 2

Hi Gerry,
I'm glad you like the videos. It's always good to hear they're helping someone out.

I don't believe you can delete the recovery partition. The Encore Mini uses WIMboot to keep the Windows installation size down. From a high level, that uses the WIM file in the Recovery partition for Windows, then just saves the changes to the C drive. If you were able to delete the Recovery partition, you'd take the Windows install with it.

Sorry. :(
