Patch MS13-067 fixes Elevation bug in SharePoint, all of them!

Every 2nd Tuesday of the month is Patch Tuesday for those of us in the Microsoft ecosystem. A good time is had by all each month. SharePoint was included in the fun of this month’s patches, patching a couple of particularly nasty bugs. This includes SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint 2010. Not be left out, both SharePoint 2007 AND SharePoint 2003 get patched as well. The bug is that nasty. I don’t even have a blog tag for SharePoint 2003.

Read through my Hey! Should I install this SharePoint patch? blog post to see whether I recommend you install this patch or not.

Here are some notes:

SharePoint 2013

It looks like KB2817315 will require the March 2013 PU be installed before it will install and it will bump your build number up to 15.0.4435.1002.

It looks like KB810083 will also require the March 2013 PU be installed before it will install. It contains internationalized versions so it’s a good sized download at nearly 500 MB.

I don’t have any SharePoint 2013 VMs running at RTM, so I can’t verify those requirements. I gathered them by looking through each patch’s XML files. As I play with these patches more I’ll update this blog post.

Happy patching,

tk

Dead link

This is the only place I could find on this site to contact someone.  The April 2013 CU link on this page appears to have not been created.

That is all.  Keep up the good work.

Re: Dead link

Yeah, I've been lazy. Thanks for the nudge, I fixed it. :)

Should I install this update?

Great site! I've followed it for a while and this is the first time I've commented.
I'm very curious to know if you think we should apply this update as I manage a Foundation 2010 server and want to make sure it is protected. I've reviewed the site you linked to and it does not have a category for Patches.  (also the site you made to understand the different types of updates has really helped me better understand why I need them and what they do)

SharePoint 2010

Has anyone installed MS13-067 on SharePoint 2010 via Windows Update? If so, does it call the Farm Build version to iterate?

Tested on SharePoint 2013 RTM

I have an VM running Server 2012/SP2013 and I tried to install the patches for testing. When running the executable for both patches it will give you the error: The expected version of the product was not found on the system.

Re: Tested on SharePoint 2013 RTM

I had similar problems on one server I installed it on. The third patch is an Office Web Apps patch, so it wasn't applicable to a SharePoint server. Not sure why it's listed there. I was able to get the KB2817315 patch to install, but the KB810083 would not. Do you have the March PU installed?

Re: Tested on SharePoint 2013 RTM

I tested these out in a RTM environment and received the "expected version.." error, which confirms the March PU requirement.

I was able to get both patches installed on my March PU VM:
KB2817315 - Brought build number up to 15.0.4535.1000
KB810083 - Kept build number at 15.0.4535.1000

Are these included in future CUs

Hey Todd,

In cases of a critical hotfix like this, do you know if Microsoft includes them in future CUs? I realize I need to get them installed but I also know I'm waiting for a specific CU release to fix another bug in our environment and I figure if I can reduce our outages to just one that would help me retain my sanity. I just can't remember if previous critical updates were ever also bundled into a future CU.

Thanks,
AO

Re: Patch MS13-067 fixes Elevation bug in SharePoint, all of them!

Every 2nd Tuesday is Patch Tuesday for Microsoft users. This month’s updates fixed serious bugs in SharePoint 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003. Make sure to review my blog post on whether to install the SharePoint patch. As you navigate through patching, why not take a break for the Slope Game? It’s a fun way to unwind while you tackle those tech updates. Happy patching! https://slopegamerun.com/
