“Free Advice” is published! Huzzah!

After many months of procrastination and a little “not knowing what the hell I’m doing,” my self-published eBook “Free Advice” is finally available on the Amazon Kindle. It’s a collection of all my blog posts about SharePoint 2010, but in a convenient ebooky format. As this blog is open to the world, I consider it free advice. And you know what they say about free advice, it's worth every penny you paid for it.  The posts are broken down into five parts:

Installation
Battling the User Profile Service
Stuff about SQL
PowerShell Awesomeness
Posts That Didn't Go Anywhere Else

Each post gets its own chapter, its own little moment in the sun. Along with each blog post I provide background on what inspired me to write the post. Then I cover what I’ve learned since I originally published the post. Finally each chapter ends with the comments left about the post on his blog. While not always helpful, sometimes the comments are quite funny.

Since the bulk of this content is already available on the Internet, during the rare moments when my blog is available, I threw in an extra chapter to sweeten the deal. Chapter 44, "Todd’s Top Twelve Troubleshooting Tips" is all new and original for the book. It won't appear on this blog for at least 60 days. This chapter contains 12 techniques I use when trying to ferret out SharePoint problems. Plus the chapter title has alliteration and every man, woman, and child loves alliteration.

For phase 1 the book is only available through Amazon for the Kindle. You can order it from this link. Eventually it’ll be available as unDRMed PDF, MOBI, and any other format I can think of. My plan is that if someone buys it in any format that I’ll give it to them in the rest of the electronic formats. So if you buy the Kindle version now, you’ll be able to download the other versions at no extra charge when I get them ready.

If you have any requests for formats, let me know. Also, being in the US my experience with buying things online is very US centric. If you can’t get it in your area, or have any problems or suggestions, let me know. I’ll do whatever I can to make it easy for you to buy it. Smile

If you do buy the book, please do me a favor and leave a review at Amazon. The reviews and ratings there can make or break a book. Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cant buy

I'm sorry to hear that. Which Amazon site are you going to? The book is available is a few markets in Europe. It might take a couple of days for it all to get authorized though. If you can't buy it in a couple of days let me.

Sorry again for the trouble. :(

Formats

Hi Todd,

Do you have an estimate of when any other formats might become available?

I use a nook and/or my ipad for reading ebooks - especially those that are worth every penny ;-)

Available in UK

As I am based in UK I was able to complete a purchase by changing the url to Amazon copied from the blog post and changing amazon.com to amazon.co.uk

Re: Re: Cant buy

Hello again,

I live in Sweden. Now I get the options to change region, but once I log in, it says that I can't buy it because of copyright restrictions.

Re: Formats

Hi Tony,
I'm working through it now. Hopefully a week or so and I'll have more options for formats. The biggest problem is that every format needs a different, well format. That takes time. Also, each marketplace (Amazon, B&N, Google, Apple) require a different format and hoops to jump through. I'm slowly working through it though. :)

Mike,
Thanks for buying the book. I appreciate it. Thanks for posting the tip to help people buy it in the UK.

Sorry you're having so much trouble. I do appreciate the effort you're going through. Hopefully Amazon will make it available to these other markets soon.

If your gonna do this

Great idea Todd and I really want to buy the material but buying a Kindle, Nook whatever to do so is ... well I wont do it.

I have an iPad. I can open PDFs. You can release on a web site with a secured password and account.

I struggle to se the problem in getting it to the masses. I guess there are issues I am unaware of.

Re: If your gonna do this

I have a PDF version. I even have it mostly ready to sell. :) Part of the joy (or pain) of self-publishing is that you get to do _every_ _single_ _bit_ yourself. Including setting up the store front and making sure everything is in place. The store is at http://store.toddklindt.com. Before I can really sell the PDF there I need to tweak some of the sign in stuff and sign up for a new Paypal account. Hopefully I'll get that all done this week. Then those PDFs will just FLY off the shelf!
