Put "mergecontentdb" on hiatus.
In November of 2007 I published a blog post extoling the virtues of a new STSADM operation, mergecontentdb. At the time, it was the coolest thing ever. Now, after 16 months of use, it's come out that in some, very rare circumstances, mergecontentdb may fail and may result in data corruption. Because of that the SharePoint product team has suggested using it with extreme caution, or better yet, don't use it at all. Their blog has a method using Batch Site Manager to do the same thing, but without the pesky data corruption. I would imagine there's a fix in the works, so if you can hold off moving any site collections, I would recommend it.

Like my physciatrist tells me. Even negative attention is still attention.

yea this happened to me

Hey Todd, I met you at sptechcon in the bay area- how could anyone hate you...

So, I lost two top level sites doing this, and my users were freaking out.  I ran some sql scripts that look for orphaned sites and sure enough they were listed there.

After lots of nail biting I ended up detaching the content dbs and re connecting them and they came back fine.

Mom, is that you?
Just kidding.

Sorry to hear you had problems with this. I am glad to hear the fix was as easy as a detach and reattach. I feel bad that I didn't post this sooner. The KB had been out probably two weeks for I posted this. I figured everyone knew. :) Sometimes I forget you guys aren't looking over my shoulder seeing all the same stuff I am. I'll try to do better in the future.
