Netcast #11 – The Two Silos

In this week's netcast I talk about where different aspects of SharePoint content and configuration are stored. I talk about in the context of disaster recovery and what challenges can come up. I also cover why your keys are always in the last place you look.

As always, I welcome your comments. Next week I'll be recording the netcast at a different time. Stay tuned here for more details.

SharePoint Advice

Todd,

I want to thank you for the blog and webcasts.  They provide some great info and a sense of humour.  I was wondering if you might point me in the right direction on a few things.  I am fairly new to SharePoint coming from the Lotus Notes side of the world (mainly development and some admin).  I have inherited an install at my new job of a MOSS 2007 install on a Windows 2003 server (Xeon 3.8GHz, 4Gb RAM) with everything SharePoint related installed on that box.  MS-SQL Server 2000 is on that machine for SharePoint to use.  There are currently a few sites that are being used for posting documents and team collaboration, but not a lot of users.

I am looking to start to roll out a few new sites and was wondering what would be advised for going forward.  I would like to start with a fresh install so that I can assure that the proper accounts are used for the setup, all the current service packs applied, as well as seperate the SQL Server to another physical box (as I have heard that is better for performance).  I am also looking at putting SharePoint on a VM rather than installing directly on a physical box.  Any pointers on the best course of action.  Also would like to eventually move the content off the current environment into the new setup, if that is possible.  Also looking to build a VM to be used for development and testing.

I guess that I am looking for a getting started guide, so that I don't miss any critical steps.  I don't have much experience with SQL Server so not sure what you would recommend as minimum info that I should get in order to maintain it with SharePoint.

I know that I have asked alot, so even if you can provide some ideas or where to look for some of this information that would be great.  My email is scott.giesbrecht@src.sk.ca

Thanks,
Scott
